Our goal: to reach the summit at <strong data-start=\"602\" data-end=\"634\">5,895 metres above sea level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"642\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"659\">The Ascent<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"1007\">We followed the <strong data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"699\">Machame 7-day route<\/strong>, supported by guides, porters, and a chef. Over five days, we made a steady ascent to base camp at 4,800 metres. The trekking was relentlessly uphill, camping was basic, and the nights were bitterly cold. Everyone in the group battled with altitude sickness, but we knew the toughest part was still ahead.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1012\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1014\" data-end=\"1031\">Summit Night<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1171\">At midnight, under the light of the moon and our head torches, we began the final push \u2014 a 5 km climb, ascending 1,200 metres to the top.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"1303\">Our guides repeated their mantra: <em data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1220\">\u201cPole Pole\u201d<\/em> (Swahili for <em data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1250\">slowly, slowly<\/em>). Step by step, we inched upwards for seven hours.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1555\">It wasn\u2019t technically difficult (no ropes or crampons required), but it tested every ounce of fitness and determination. With oxygen levels at just 50% of those at ground level and temperatures plummeting to -10\u00b0C, progress was slow and exhausting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1557\" data-end=\"1835\">At last, we reached <strong data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1593\">Stella Point<\/strong>, which feels like the summit\u2026 only to find there\u2019s another 150 metres through the glacier to reach <strong data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1707\">Uhuru Peak<\/strong>, the true top of Kilimanjaro. Standing at the highest point in Africa, surrounded by glaciers and sunrise, was unforgettable.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1840\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1858\">The Descent<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"2159\">After the obligatory scramble for summit photos, we made the rapid descent down scree slopes, returning to base camp after 2\u20133 hours \u2014 weary, but exhilarated. One more day brought us back to the foot of the mountain, where the first bottle of <em data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2120\">Kilimanjaro beer<\/em> was truly the best I\u2019ve ever tasted.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2164\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2182\">Reflections<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2331\">All seven of us made it to the summit, and it was the spirit, encouragement, and determination of the group that made the experience so memorable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2333\" data-end=\"2443\">Would I do it again? At the time, I thought <em data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"2390\">never again<\/em>.
