{"id":1700,"date":"2012-07-18T09:00:39","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T09:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.legal4landlords.com\/?p=1700"},"modified":"2012-07-18T09:00:39","modified_gmt":"2012-07-18T09:00:39","slug":"40-of-working-tenants-cannot-afford-to-save","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.withcreative.co.uk\/lforl\/40-of-working-tenants-cannot-afford-to-save\/","title":{"rendered":"40% of Working Tenants Cannot Afford To Save"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1214\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.legal4landlords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Survey1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1214\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1214\" title=\"Survey1\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.legal4landlords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Survey1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"40% Of Working Tenants Can't Afford To Save\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">40% Of Working Tenants Can&#39;t Afford To Save<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to a new study by a leading online house and flat sharing portal, 4 in 10 tenants who are renting property in the UK private rented sector (PRS) can\u2019t afford to save<\/p>\n<p>One in seven people of those surveyed by SpareRoom.co.uk said they are having to spend more than two thirds of their take-home pay on the rent<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>15% of renters said said they are their savings to make ends meet, a figure that rose to 60% for people aged under 30.<\/li>\n<li>20% can\u2019t see how they will be able to get on the property ladder\/<\/li>\n<li>48% of tenants aged under 30 said they still owe more than \u00a310,000 in university fees.<\/li>\n<li>35% of those surveyed were trying to save for a deposit to buy a house, but of those, four in 10 (20%) had saved less than \u00a35,000.<\/li>\n<li>48% of those surveyed said they would be happy to rent long-term if there was less pressure in the UK to own a home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SpareRoom director Matt Hutchinson said: \u201cSoaring living costs mean it\u2019s a struggle for many households just to keep their heads above water each month, let alone have enough spare cash to put aside towards a deposit. What\u2019s clear is that something has to change. House prices need to fall, mortgage lenders need to offer more assistance to first-time buyers with higher loan-to-value mortgages, and the Government has to accept there is a need for more affordable housing to purchase and affordable rental properties available privately or through housing associations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>80% of tenants surveyed by the website said they were professional workers in employment, but 40% said the sizeable deposit they would need was stopping them getting on the property ladder, and 20% said UK house prices were still too high.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,000 people took part in the UK-wide study last month.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Landlord Services\" href=\"http:\/\/www.legal4landlords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Legal 4 Landlords<\/a> spokesman Sim Sekhon said \u201cUK landlords with working tenants should consider taking out Rent Guarantee insurance to protect their rental income and reduce the financial pressures mounting on tenant finances.
