Are squatters' days numbered?<\/p><\/div>Government plans to make squatting a criminal offence have had a mixed reaction from landlords<\/a> and charities.<\/p>\n

The proposals, announced this week, mean the most persistent offenders could be jailed and squatters\u2019 rights, which prevent legitimate occupiers of properties from using force to re-enter occupied buildings, could be abolished.<\/p>\n

Homelessness charity Crisis said the government should look at improving housing and support rather than criminalising \u201cpeople who are so desperate for a roof over their heads that they are often forced to sleep in abandoned buildings without heat, light or water\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, justice minister Crispin Blunt said: \u201cThese plans would end the \u2018misery, expense and incredible hassle\u2019 caused when squatters take over a property.\u201d
